Plant-Based Meals and Recipes TOC

Our plant-based meals and recipes are Super Affordable, Simple, Satisfying and Yummy (SASSY), using healthy ingredients and harmonious cooking methods based on universal principles of balance.  They reflect our way of implementing a sustainable, healing diet that is adaptable to individual needs.

The plant-based meals and recipes found here, and on my blog feature a macrobiotic approach to eating in harmony with nature's rhythms and the natural world.  Ideally, food should be a balance of the five flavors:  Sweet, Salty, Sour, Pungent & Bitter.

Some version of a high-carb, modest protein and lower-fat diet is consumed by the  longest lived populations, such as seen in traditional Japanese and Buddhist Temple diets.

Our plant-based meals and recipes are not salt, oil, sugar, soy, nor gluten-free, however, most of the recipes contain little if any sweetener, appropriate amounts of salty condiments, and are naturally gluten-free.  Each person must find their own sweet spot, and adjust the level of savory, sweet and spicy flavors to personal taste.  It's all about finding the right balance for your needs.

Plant-based diets low in sodium, and polyunsaturated essential fatty acids can lead to poor health outcomes, long-term.  We have taste receptors for the sweet flavor on our tongue.  Sugar is not the cause of diabetes.  Sugar fuels our brain and all our cells.  Excess fat, especially saturated fat, prevents sugar from getting into the cells, creating insulin resistance.

While refined white sugar has a low nutritional 'resume,' many people are consuming huge amounts of sugar, fruit and juices and achieving their weight loss and fitness goals, rebounding from failed attempts at low-carb, ketogenic diets.

Whole-food, plant-based and Macrobiotic dieters tend to avoid refined sugars, however, we see no reason to exclude organic cane sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, brown rice syrup, or sorghum syrup from your diet unless that is your preference.
